TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — After all these years, legendary Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s “Have you called your mama today?” commercial for South Central Bell Telephone Company continues to resonate with college football fans and beyond.
Especially on a day like today.
A quick Mother’s Day search on Twitter reveals that hundreds are sharing the timeless commercial, which includes some ad-libbing from Bryant. According to multiple reports, Bryant, after saying, “Have you called your mama today,” added, “I sure wish I could call mine” all on his own.
Award-winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman referenced the commercial in a 2008 Mother’s Day column.
Longtime college football reporter Tony Barnhart’s multiple Tweets about the commercial have been re-Tweeted more than 200 times.
The YouTube clip of Bryant’s commercial has been viewed more than 136,500 times. It’s sure to garner plenty of new and old eyes today.
